New Zealand’s South Island has also been called the business opportunity island. There is a reason for that. Someone with an enormous amount of authority recently surveyed lots of people and found that a certain percentage of them would love to work at home. Some said they would jump at the chance of becoming self-employed while others were more subdued in their response. Most people said the lure of big dollars was their main reason for wanting to quit their day jobs and become their own boss.

Freda Whatuira has been working from home on the South Island since she was old enough to kill a goat. “I might look like a tough old broad but I’m not,” she smiled, revealing a row of misshapen teeth, “I’ve been involved in computer work in one way or another for over fifty years and in that time I’ve learned a thing or two. One of the things I’ve learned has something to do with stuffing envelopes but that is another story for another place and time. Basically, all I can tell you is, if you want to earn a good wage, you’ve got to work your arse off.”

Freda is probably the wisest old business woman still alive on the South Island but don’t hold that against her. She has been supplying on-the-job training for careers advisors since Adam was a boy. She claims to have employed everyone over the age of seventy three living in a four hundred kilometer radius of her house and I have no reason to doubt her. She believes a persons occupation can tell you a lot about that persons overall demeanor but she doesn’t believe in life after love.
