I ran into an old friend at the pub last night and one thing led to another and before you knew it we were discussing my latest hair brained scheme. After I explained exactly what I was doing he mentioned that he thought I was getting money for nothing. Believe me, there isn’t a data entry operator in the world who doesn’t earn every dollar they generate. Just because some workers choose to do their bidding from home doesn’t mean they’re not toiling away with the same intensity as someone who commutes to an office every day.
He took some convincing but my friend finally came around to seeing things my way just before closing time. I know it’s not nice but I left feeling quite proud of my self and somewhat superior. I wouldn’t trade my data entry job for his high-stress middle management position for all the tea in China, despite being quite a big tea drinker. The only real way to measure one’s success is to compare one’s situation to that of one’s friends and I’m satisfied that I’m in a much better boat than my friend. Cool!
